Fantastic! You took the first step to getting your estate plan–you contacted an attorney. But what can you expect now?
At Regent Law, PC, getting an estate plan is a process which takes approximately three meetings, sometimes a few more. We will sit down together and discuss your family, your assets and how you think you want your assets distributed. The types of estate planning documents and the purpose of those documents will be explained to you.
Finally, we may discuss some issues with distribution that you may not have thought about before such as: If your child passes away before you do, how would you like their share to be distributed? To their children? Their spouse? Do want to give to a charity? How much?
After that first meeting, we will send you home to gather some information and to make decisions without the pressure of sitting in our office. While the office is comfortable, it’s not the place for you to make these types of decisions and does not afford you the opportunity to have discussions with your trusted friends and family, nor does it give you the time to think about these decisions.
A few weeks after your initial appointment, we will meet again to discuss the specifics of your plan, the fiduciaries you chose to handle your affairs, and the distribution plan you would like to have in place.
The final meeting will be a signing meeting. At this meeting, we will review all of the documents drafted for you and we sign your estate plan. Our goal is to make this a pleasant process where you leave the office feeling informed and relieved that you have been able to make important decisions and protect your family and loved ones.
